Opening my own firm was certainly daunting, but a few important decisions eased the process. The most important thing is to build a team that enhances and complements your particular talents. That includes finding a custodian that shares your values. For me, I wanted a custodian that would be my advocate. In this respect, I’ve found that TD Ameritrade has terrific resources for their advisors, providing the same kind of support for me that I provide my clients.


Next, build a team that covers your weak points so that you can concentrate on leveraging your strengths. It’s also important to identify your values and find likeminded people who share your passions. And remember—you don’t have to be everything to everyone. Instead, focus on being everything to a specific set of clients so you can make a difference in their lives.
